An introduction to Script changes

Dr Erik Kwakkel

In this video Dr Erik Kwakkel (Leiden University) introduces three different manuscripts from the Senate House Library collection that range from the Carolingian age to the Gothic age. He points out script features in each and demonstrates how the scripts change over time. This video features the following Senate House Library manuscripts: Bede on Songs of Songs (MS 835); Bible - Genesis to Ruth (MS 785); and Paris Bible (MS 905).

InScribe Palaeography: Palaeography: an overview

These videos were created as part of the InScribe Palaeography online tutorial developed by a collaboration of School of Advanced Study institutes. The course introduces the general concepts of palaeography and manuscript study and trains students to undertake their own transcriptions from medieval English and European manuscripts.

The InScribe project was managed and developed by the Institute of Historical Research, Institute of English Studies, and the Warburg Institute, with help from Senate House Library, Digital Humanities at Kings College London, and the Exeter Cathedral Archives.
