Enhanced Learning Credit Scheme

The School is an Approved Learning Provider under this scheme (ID 4859), which is an MoD initiative to promote lifelong learning among members of the Armed Forces, who can apply for a proportion of their tuition fees to be met by the MoD.

External funding sources for EU and overseas students

British Chevening Scholarships

These awards are to enable Overseas and EU students to study in the United Kingdom. To apply for a scholarship, you will need to contact the British Embassy or High Commission or the British Council in the country of which you are a citizen. The scholarships are offered in more than 150 countries. Details and the list of eligible countries are on the website. These scholarships are mainly awarded to Master’s students.

Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund

This scholarship fund is for Canadian students who are currently undertaking full-time postgraduate studies in a multi-year (2 years or more) postgraduate programme in the UK. Awards are exclusively for Canadian students who have already completed at least one full-time term of study, with at least one full-time term remaining starting from September 2024.

Commonwealth Scholarships for Research Students

Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships are aimed at PhD candidates from low and middle income Commonwealth countries who wish to spend 12 months at a UK university as part of their doctoral studies in their home country. The scholarships are aimed at high-quality graduates whose proposed research has a developmental focus and who have the potential to become influential teachers or researchers in their home countries.

Federal Direct Loans for US Students

The School of Advanced Study participates in the Federal Direct Loan programme. Unsubsidized Loans and Plus Loans are available through the Direct Loan programme operated by the US Education Department. Direct Loans are educational loans to assist US citizens with the costs of studying.

Marshall Scholarships

For U.S. citizens only, Marshall Scholarships are mainly funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and are overseen by the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission. Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the UK. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at UK institutions in any field of study.

Aga Khan Foundation

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes.

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding Online lists alternative sources of funding – including from charities – which can make awards (fees, maintenance, research costs) to any student regardless of subject, or nationality. It contains a huge database of funding opportunities, comprehensive guidance, and numerous tools to help you prepare a winning grant application. The School has purchased a licence to the guide, making it free for all students and staff to use.
