Fee Status
All students applying to the School of Advanced Study have a fee status assessment before they are made a formal offer to study. The assessment determines the level of tuition fees that the student will have to pay for their programme. This can be either the “lower” Home or the “higher” Overseas fee.
The fee status assessment is undertaken by the Admissions office of the school, initially using the information provided by applicants in the application form. Further information and evidence may be requested if the information in their application form is not sufficient to establish fee status. The outcome of the assessment is communicated to the applicants at the offer stage via the offer letter.
Applicants are classified either ‘Home’ or ‘Overseas’ for fee status purposes based on their nationality, UK immigration status and whether they meet the relevant residency requirements. This assessment is not affected by a student’s financial situation and is not means tested. The School can’t change an applicant’s fee status on the basis of their (and that of their family’s) financial circumstances.
The School is required to comply with UK Government legislation governing this assessment process - the relevant sections of the legislation (as applicable to English universities) can be found below:
The Higher Education (Fee Limit Condition) (England) Regulations 2017(Opens in new window)
The Education (Fees and Awards) (England) Regulations 2007(Opens in new window)
The Education (Student Fees, Awards and Support) (Amendment) Regulations 2021 (Opens in new window)contain important amendments to the above regulations (with subsequent amendments in 2022 and 2023).
Working out your fee status
UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs) offer a free user-friendly guidance to help students and institutions understand who is eligible for 'Home' fee status and can be downloaded from their website here.
Fee status can only be assessed once a formal application is submitted. Unfortunately, we are unable to assess fee status before an applicant applies.
Changes to your fee status during your studies
There are a limited number of changes that can occur that would allow a student to go from Overseas to Home fees. If you believe your change of circumstances would change your fee status please get in touch with the admissions office via email at admissions@sas.ac.uk.
