Profile
Dr Hayes de Kalaf supports the national mission of the School of Advanced Study to promote and facilitate Research Training in the field of History and related disciplines. Her role involves working with academic leads to develop the School’s short course portfolio, facilitating cross-Institute/departmental collaboration and helping to launch new courses and seasonal schools, both online and in-person.
Her own work examines how historically states have manufactured, blocked or denied access to citizens - including the migrant-descended - to their documentation. She is also interested in the growing influence of contemporary international organisations in facilitating the en masse introduction of digital identification systems around the world.
Dr Hayes de Kalaf's critically acclaimed book 'Legal Identity, Race and Belonging in the Dominican Republic: From Citizen to Foreigner' was published with a Foreword by the Pulitzer Prize-winning Dominican American author Junot Díaz. In 2021, she relaunched and now convenes the popular Caribbean Studies Seminar Series based at the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies (ILCS)
