Crisis in Nigeria?

At the Kigali Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in June 2022, President Buhari confided that his greatest concerns were around the deteriorating security situation across the country: in northern Nigeria bordering the Sahel region, Borno state, in the Delta, and in the Biafra region. Whereas the aid and development community and security used to operate in silos, it is now widely acknowledged that security is vital for sustainable development – indeed, the security-development nexus was embedded in OECD aid developmental agenda in the 2000s. 


As the country readies itself for the Presidential and national assembly elections on 25 February, what are the challenges facing an incoming government? To what extent has the impact of the COVID pandemic caused lasting damage to the Nigerian political economy? Can the Nigerian diaspora play a greater role What of the country’s reliance on foreign exchange earnings from fossil fuels, set against the recent devastating floods in the country which are attributed to climate change? This panel of experts considers the difficulties confronting the country and the cohesion of the Nigerian state.
