Professor Peter Mack FBA (1955-2023)

We are shocked and saddened to learn that Peter Mack died in a car accident on Thursday 5th October.

Peter earned his MPhil (1978) and PhD (1983) at the Warburg Institute and returned to the Institute as Director from 2010 to 2014—on secondment from the University of Warwick, where he served as Chair of both the English Department and the Arts Faculty. A prolific author and scrupulous editor, he was one of our leading authorities on rhetoric and logic in Renaissance Europe.

Many of us last saw him earlier this year at the British Academy’s celebration of Margaret McGowan (who chaired the Warburg’s Advisory Council during Peter’s Directorship), and his moving speech on that occasion can be found here.

Further details about the funeral and memorial event will be announced as soon as we have them. For now, our thoughts and prayers are with Peter’s family.
