Inua Ellams to perform at Senate House

Date

The award-winning poet and playwright will perform his one-man show – An Evening with an Immigrant – on Thursday 19 October as part of the Bloomsbury Festival.

Littered with poems, stories and anecdotes, An Evening with an Immigrant charts his ridiculous, fantastic, poignant immigrant-story of escaping fundamentalist Islam, finding friendship in Dublin, performing solo at the National Theatre, and drinking wine with the Queen of England, all the while without a country to belong to or a place to call home.

Born in Nigeria, Ellams is a cross disciplinary artist, an internationally touring performer, a poet, playwright, screenwriter,  graphic artist & designer. This year, he has spent time at the School of Advanced Study as Creative Practitioner in Residence at the Institute of English Studies. He has also been awarded an MBE for his services to the arts, as well as an honorary doctorate from the University of the Arts London.

The performance is presented in association with Choose Love, an organisation that supports refugees and displaced people all over the world. Proceeds from this event will go towards Choose Love’s vital work supporting refugees, including those here in the UK.

Sarah Singer, Professor of Refugee Law at the Refugee Law Initiative will introduce the event.

The Bloomsbury Festival, which takes place from 13-22 October 2023, will feature over 100 events including theatre, music, exhibitions, talks and walks. The University of London is a core funder of the Bloomsbury Festival.
