Zainab Fasiki: Activist Art and Challenging the ‘Shame’ of Women’s Bodies

Artist Zainab Fasiki explores how graphic novels and social media can break taboos around women's bodies and are driving social change.

In recent years, both anglophone and francophone women artists have increasingly embraced the graphic novel as a powerful medium for exploring ‘taboo’ aspects of female bodily experiences and advocating for societal and political change in how women’s bodies are discussed and legislated.

This online event engages with this evolving visual and textual movement, featuring Moroccan artist Zainab Fasiki, who uses graphic narratives to challenge societal taboos surrounding women's bodies, sexuality, and self-expression. ‘Artivist’ Fasiki, author of Hshouma. Corps et sexualité au Maroc (2019), works across both print media and digital platforms.

In this talk (in English, with simultaneous interpretation into French), she will reflect on how graphic narratives serve as tools for activism, fostering tangible change, and how using social media as an exhibition space influences efforts to break taboos surrounding women. Her presentation will be followed by a Q&A with participants.

Ces dernières années, de plus en plus d’artistes femmes, tant anglophones que francophones, se sont tournées vers le roman graphique comme un médium puissant pour explorer des aspects « tabous » de l’expérience corporelle féminine et pour plaider en faveur d’un changement sociétal et politique dans la manière dont le corps de la femmes est représenté et encadré par la loi.

Cet événement en ligne s’inscrit dans ce mouvement visuel et textuel en pleine évolution et accueillera l’artiste marocaine Zainab Fasiki, qui utilise le récit graphique pour contester les tabous sociaux entourant le corps des femmes, la sexualité et l’expression de soi. « Artiviste », Fasiki est l’autrice de Hshouma. Corps et sexualité au Maroc (2019) et travaille à la fois dans les médias imprimés et sur les plateformes numériques.

Lors de cette intervention (en anglais, avec interprétation simultanée en français), elle reviendra sur le rôle du roman graphique comme outil d’activisme, capable de susciter des changements concrets, et sur l’impact des réseaux sociaux en tant qu’espaces d’exposition pour briser les tabous liés aux femmes. Sa présentation sera suivie d’une session de questions-réponses avec les participant·es.
