Understanding and Appreciating Uses of AI in Image-making Practice

Claire Anscomb (De Montfort)

Abstract

The contributions of humans to visual artworks generated using AIs are frequently downplayed, but is it appropriate to engage with and evaluate such work as primarily the product of a machine? In addition to examining how much knowledge of the processes behind AI image generation benefits appreciation of these works, in this talk, I will assess the ways human agency permeates these processes and how viewers relate to these creative acts through the resultant products.

The London Aesthetics Forum (LAF) is a Forum of the Institute of Philosophy at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study. With lectures on topics in aesthetics and philosophy of art, LAF aims to stimulate philosophical reflection on art. Our events are free and open to all.
