Roads not taken. A Conversation with Julia Franke, Exhibition Curator at the Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin
What if the 1944 attack on Hitler’s life had been successful?
What if the Berlin Wall had not been built in 1961?
What if Egon Honecker had ordered the tanks in to quash the 1989 revolution in the GDR?
These are just three questions raised by the current exhibition at the Deutsches Historisches Museum Berlin ‘Roads not taken; oder: Es hätte auch anders kommen können’, which explores the circumstances of crucial moments in recent German history.
The 2023 DAAD/ILCS German Language Competition has been built around these moments, asking participants to imagine ‘what if…’. As well as celebrating the winning entries, this event offers a ‘behind the scenes’ view of the DHM exhibition. In conversation with Alexandra Lloyd (Oxford), curator Julia Franke will provide insights into the process of setting up the exhibition, from initial ideas through the various stages of decision-making to the final product.
The competition is generously supported by the DAAD (United Kingdom), the Goethe Institute, London, the German Embassy in London, the Embassy of Switzerland in the United Kingdom, the Keith Spalding Trust (Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies), and the Stiftung Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin.
All are welcome to attend. Seats are limited, so advance online registration is essential.
