In recent years much work has been done to further our understanding First Crusade narratives, especially relating to the complex relationship between various literary cultures and the construction of this history across time and place.

By drawing on my PhD research, this paper engages with these discussions by examining representations of leadership within the context of internal power dynamics and diplomacy with Islam, with a particular focus on Raymond of Saint-Gilles and Godfrey of Bouillon.
