PhD Session: Gender and Sexuality in Modern Britain
In this special PhD session on Gender and Sexuality in Modern Britain, we have two shorter papers.
Michelle Tessmann from the University of Reading will present on her research, ‘Socialist-Feminism and the Conceptualisation of Work in the British Women’s Liberation Movement’. She investigates ‘work’ as a continually evolving notion of debate within the movement, tracing this conceptual development through the publications of socialist-feminist thinkers.
Beth Charlton from University College London will present her research, ‘Queer Women and Where to Find Them: An Intersectional History of Lesbian Space in London from the 1970s-1990s’. Beth’s research uses space as an analytical and historical lens to illuminate a wide range of commercial, public, private and domestic lesbian spaces in London from the 1970s to the 1990s. She explores how these spaces impacted the formation of lesbian identities and communities, demonstrating how identity, community and space interacted with one another, both at a local and global level.
