Law Commission Consultation on Contempt of Court: Data Protection Issues
The Law Commission is currently consulting on reforms to contempt of court law and procedure. The Commission’s consultation paper includes reform proposals and questions relating to information law issues including with respect to:
- police powers to share data with the Attorney General’s Office;
- whether the Attorney General’s Office should have investigatory powers to obtain information from social media platforms;
- the recording, sharing and publishing of data on contempt findings and sanctions; and
- whether contempt of court should be recorded on criminal records databases and disclosed on criminal records certificates.
At this event, the Criminal Law Commissioner, Professor Penney Lewis, will present the Law Commission’s proposals on these matters. Expert discussants will offer comments, followed by a Q&A with attendees. As part of the consultation, the discussion will inform the Commission’s final recommendations for reform.
