“To inspect and see the figures and characters”: Encountering Heretical Books’
Abstract
This paper will explore the extent to which we can recover some of the experience of encountering heretical books in the fifteenth and early sixteenth century. Focusing in particular on accounts of heresy trials, as well as material evidence, it asks what the affective charge was of these books - for those who considered themselves orthodox, those wavering on the cusp of heresy, and those closely enmeshed in Lollard circles - and the implications this has for thinking about reception and retention.
