This paper will examine the Gouernaunce of Prynces a Middle English mirror for princes written in 1423 by Dublin-based scribe and notary James Yonge for James Butler 4th earl of Ormond.  The Gouernaunce has aspects typical of its genre but also very specific elements such as dialect which relate to its locus of production.  Of particular interest is how it focuses on English identity and power within the English lordship of Ireland which was a key outpost of the medieval English empire.  Viewing the production of this work through the lens of contemporary medieval cultural and political concerns this study will shed light on the use of literature and memory to shape perceptions of the past and potentially shape the contemporary world.
