In her wake

In the last thirty years, a slow, and little noted, change has started to transform Britain’s professoriate. In 2020, there were nearly 20,000 professors in the UK. Around a tenth were officially recorded as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, including only 490 women in the entire country. While the statistics are useful, they cannot communicate the remarkable journeys of these women, many of whom are the first of their heritage to hold chairs in their institutions, disciplines, and departments. This event brings together an extraordinary cohort of women who first achieved full professorships in their disciplines. We will reflect on more than three decades of pathbreaking achievements in whose wake so many now tread, and seek better ahead.
