The Fairground, the Circus, and the Victorian Railways
Based on the author's MA dissertation, the talk considers the relationship between the travelling entertainers, the fairground showmen and the circus, and the railway companies in the late-nineteenth century. It answers five questions: how did the railways change the competitive forces in the travelling entertainment industries? What were the key changes in the travelling entertainment industry? What was the mode of strategic adaptation used by the Companies in their dealings with customers, rivals, and external stakeholders such as the government? How did the Companies adapt their resources and competencies to the demands of the travelling entertainers? Did the Companies’ value chains offer any rent-bearing strategic assets?
