This workshop will look at regional and continental responses to the increasing trend of coups in West Africa. It will also explore the impact of on-going and emerging conflicts on the continent on forced migration population and local communities in host states.

Questions to be investigated:
  • What is the impact of the increasing number of coups in West Africa on migration movement in the region and across the continent? What have the responses of neighbouring countries?
  • What is the role of the AU and Regional Economic Communities in peace keeping; promotion of democracy; avoiding displacement?
  • Are the core tenants of the global refugee regime, such as non-refoulment, being respected today?
