Effecting a Paradigm Shift in Holocaust and Genocide Studies?
Many scholars have expressed reservations about the conceptual fundaments of the field of Holocaust and Genocide Studies. My own reservations appeared in early 2021 in the form of The Problems of Genocide: Permanent Security and the Language of Transgression. Critics have levelled a number of mainly political accusations against it while others have welcomed what they see as a necessary historicization of the fields’ limitations as they see them. In this paper, I reconstruct this debate. Analysing the content and form of various accusations, as well as the intense attachment to settled interpretations, reveals generational change in how mass violence and trauma are framed and studied. I ask whether we are witnessing nothing less than the decolonization of Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
