Creative Practice and Feminism: Readings, Dialogue and Collaboration
Organised by the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS)
This session will include a reading of work in English and Spanish by Lucila Garay, Argentine theatre-maker and drama teacher based at Teatro Timbre 4 in Buenos Aires. There will be a discussion involving Lucila Garay, who will join us in person, and CLACS researcher and translator Sophie Stevens, chaired by Catherine Boyle.
Lucila Garay’s 2023 play, Paisaje Km 31, premiered at Teatro Timbre 4 Buenos Aires, and depicts the experiences of two sex workers living in a small town near Buenos Aires. As misinformation and fear spread following a car crash nearby, we see how the bodies, lives and choices of the sex workers, who are already in a precarious situation, are manipulated and exploited through violence. The play responds to ongoing debates about the right to abortion in Argentina as well as to concerns about misinformation and fake news.
The discussion will be followed by a reception.
This event is the final session in a one-day symposium Creative Practice and Feminism: Methodologies, Collaboration and Performance to celebrate International Women’s Day. You can see the programme for the day and registration options here.
