Book Launch: Law, Visual Culture, and the Show Trial by Dr Agata Fijalkowski
Please join us for the book launch of Dr Agata Fijalkowski’s (Leeds Beckett University and IALS Associate Fellow) Law, Visual Culture, and the Show Trial (Routledge). Fijalkowski’s book contributes to the discourse in visual epistemology in terms of what the image tells us within a legal context. The book’s selection of photographs and discussion centres on three key figures who rose above incredibly challenging circumstances arising from WW2 and then authoritarian rule. They are the Albanian writer Musine Kokalari (1917-1983); East German judge Hilde Benjamin (1902-1989); and Polish prosecutor Mieczysław Siewierski (1900-1981). Their legal life stories contained in their images and spilling over into other photographs can inform and enrich our understanding about law and justice during the immediate post-WW2, by pointing to commonalities and discrepancies all via the photographs and part of the legal photography/legal photojournalism of the time.
The book launch amplifies the significance of archival research in law.
It will appeal to the IALS community and more widely owing to the intersection between law and humanities in which the book is situated
Speakers: Dr Mara Malagodi (Warwick Law School, University of Warwick), Prof Les Moran (Birkbeck School of Law, Birkbeck, University of London) and Dr David Seymour (City Law School of City, University of London)
Chair: Professor Carl Stychin, IALS Director.
The event will be followed by a drinks reception.
This event is free to attend, but booking is required.
