Michael Habila Dauda worked as a Legal Drafter and Parliamentary Counsel of the National Assembly in Abuja for over 10 years. As part of his professional development he attended various short courses to enhance my knowledge, including the Professional Legislative Drafting short course at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS). After completing this course he studied the LLM in Drafting Legislation, Regulation, and Policy.

If you’re currently considering studying this course, I would say do not hesitate in applying. It is an excellent course that will equip you with the knowledge of Parliaments, as well as enhance your drafting skills. It also offers you the opportunity to interact with colleagues from other jurisdiction and trust me, the knowledge you will get from that alone is invaluable.

This LLM was originally brought to my attention by another academic in Lagos, who recommended the course. I decided to research SAS on the internet, and contacted IALS this way. I had always wanted to study my LLM at a university as prestigious as the University of London, so I submitted an application!

I took this programme on a full-time basis which allowed me to concentrate my efforts on my studies. Due to being based in Nigeria, I relocated to London for the duration of the course. This required me to obtain a residential permit for the duration of the programme, and look for student housing in the Bloomsbury area. I initially signed a housing contract with Lansdowne Terrace; the International Hall of the University of London, and when that contract expired I moved into a flat with a friend in Dartford.

Although the UK is quite cold, I really enjoyed living in London! There are a lot of shops, tourist attractions and people, so there’s always something to do. During my time here, I met and shared ideas with a range of people from different parts of the world, many of whom I am still in contact with today.

The course was interesting and enjoyable, and the style of teaching was fantastic. The tutors were cordial, friendly and they were of great assistance. The excellent support of the tutors made my study experience smooth and glitch free.

Since graduating from the LLM in Drafting Legislation, Regulation, and Policy, I have returned to Nigeria where I am putting into practice all of the things I learnt. This course has helped my career immensely; I have achieved two promotions to the position I am in now; Assistant Director Legal, National Assembly Abuja, Nigeria.
