PERFORMING WITHOUT LIMITS
The Fifth Biennial Conference of the Iberian Theater and Performance Network (ITPN) will focus on exploring the limits of dramatic representation by expanding the definition of what escapes representation. While historical and personal traumatic events are considered the most unspeakable events in human terms, it is one of the objects of inquiry in theatre and performance studies. Our discipline has examined the limits of representation around these and other topics that have also been silenced throughout history due to religious, psychological, or social conventions. If taboo is what cannot be expressed and therefore needs to be suppressed, we want to explore the circumstances preventing the representation of an event and why is it necessary to perform it. ITPN aims at creating a forum to exchange ideas among theatre scholars working on different periods of specialization. Therefore we encourage contributions from a transhistorical approach, expanding from early modern theatre to contemporary dramaturgy, with a specific focus on the Iberian Peninsula.
Topics may include but are not limited to:
•Dramaturgy
•Translation
•Censorship
•Gender and sexuality
•Race
•Performance practices
•Audience and critical reception
•Adaption into film, television, opera, musical, comic books
•Cultural and political appropriations
•Artistic failures or successes and their aftermath
•Applied theatre in educational, outreach and therapeutic projects.
There will be two ways of presenting at the conference. We invite abstracts for ONE of the two proposed formats (in English or Spanish):
A.Abstracts for a regular 20-minute paper on any topic related to the theme of the conference (in English or Spanish).
B.Abstracts for Panel Proposals related to a particular topic.
Submitting proposals:
•Email the abstract or a panel proposal (250 words maximum), along with a brief academic biography to the program committee at itpn24@gmail.com.
•The deadline for submissions is October 15, 2023.
•Since space is limited and there will be no parallel sessions, all abstracts will be peer-reviewed and notifications of accepted proposals will be confirmed by November 2023.
This conference will have a registration fee of $150 USD (£138) for speakers and $100 USD (£92) for graduate students, and auditors.
