The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies welcomes students enrolled for an MPhil / PhD in Law from across the UK to this specially tailored day of presentations, library tours and networking opportunities. 

Speakers:

Professor Diamond Ashiagbor;  Professor Lisa Webley; Dr Constantin Stefanou; Hester Swift; and Laura Griffths.

Sessions will be held on:

  • Becoming a legal researcher: what is a PhD in law? - Professor Diamond Ashiagbor, Professor of Law at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies
  • Literature reviews - Professor Lisa Webley, University of Westminster
  • Comparative legal research - Dr Constantin Stefanou, Director of the Sir William Dale Centre for Legislative Studies, IALS
  • Qualitative and quantitative research for PhDs  - Professor Lisa Webley, University of Westminster
  • IALS Library: successful researching using our electronic resources - Hester Swift, senior librarian from IALS Library
  • Optional tours of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Library led by senior library staff

Although tailored specifically for PhD in Law students, this training programme may contain some material which repeats and reinforces generic training suitable for all PhD students.


Two further training days will take in place on: 1) Friday 2 March 2018 on How to get a PhD in Law.  The PhD Journey: Supervision, research ethics and preparing yourself for upgrade and vivas;  and on Friday 11 May 2018 on How to get a PhD in Law.  Researching, disseminating an publishing in the digital world.
