Edited together with Alistair Robinson, Cultures of London: Legacies of Migration (publishing January 11th 2024) includes contributions from 35 academics, artists, broadcasters and curators which celebrate the plurality of the capital’s cultures and affirms the importance of migration in the making of the modern city. Charlotte will introduce the volume before focusing on her chapter: ‘Culture and Horticulture in Lambeth from ‘Tradescant’s Ark’ to Vauxhall Gardens’ which looks at Vauxhall’s history, concentrating on the Tradescants, 17th Century plant collectors, and Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens which, from its refashioning in the 1740s through to its 19th demise, hosted an international cast of performers.


About the Speaker

Dr Charlotte Grant is Associate Professor of English at Northeastern University, London. She has previously worked at King’s College, London,  the Royal College of Art (RCA/V&A Centre for the Study of the Domestic Interior), and Cambridge University.
