Text Encoding, Analysis and Editing

DHRH staff work at the forefront of text encoding projects. This includes not only digital scholarly editing but also linked open data and library resource management. Complementary to this is our focus on text analysis, as we provide training in text mining and corpus analysis as well as distant and computational reading methods.

The EpiDoc Collaborative & EFES (EpiDoc Front-end Services), for encoding and publishing ancient texts in TEI XML. In addition to work on the core guidelines and tools, we collaborate on several major projects involving EpiDoc and related digital epigraphic resources, including:

Inscriptions of Roman Cyrenaica (2020) and Inscriptions of Roman Tripolitania (2021)

Ancient Inscriptions of the Northern Black Sea

SigiDoc (localisation of EpiDoc for Byzantine seals)

A Digital Corpus of Painted Greek Inscriptions from Medieval Cyprus (University of Cyprus, Nicosia)

ENCODE: Bridging the <gap> in Ancient Writing Cultures: ENhance COmpetences in the Digital Era (Bologna)

US Epigraphy Project (Brown University)

DHARMA: The Domestication of “Hindu” Asceticism and the Religious Making of South and Southeast Asia

CARMEN: Communal Art – Reconceptualising Metrical Epigraphy Network

Herman Melville Electronic Library. This digital critical edition currently has three model ‘fluid text’ editions of Moby-Dick, Battle-Pieces, and Billy Budd, Sailor. Current projects include Typee and the Melville family correspondence, a map of Melville’s travels in Paris, and pedagogical tools for digital editing.

Melville’s Marginalia Online is a project that collects information about Melville’s documented readings and sources, with a virtual reconstruction of books in which he left marginalia. It also develops new tools for analysing marginalia, such as text analysis and visualisation interfaces.

The Bow in the Cloud and anti-slavery print networks. This project is primarily concerned with creating a digital edition of an 1834 British literary anti-slavery anthology edited by Mary Anne Rawson. It is also building a network analysis prototype of the manuscript collection associated with the anthology.
