In 2011, the Collegiate Council made changes to the way in which we decide on the award of University of London Honorary Degrees at Foundation Day. One of its aims was to widen the range of those invited to make nominations.

Alumni of the School of Advanced Study are now invited to nominate outstanding individuals to receive a University of London Honorary Degree, up to six of which are awarded each year at the University’s Foundation Day ceremony.

Who can be nominated?

The nominee should be an outstanding individual who has excelled in their field. The person nominated may have a specific connection to the University or to London, or have conspicuous achievements in those aspects of academic, artistic, public and business life that are valued by the University. We are keen that the list of recipients reflects something of the diversity of the University and of London itself.

Past recipients have included:

  • Frank Gardner (BBC's Security Correspondent)
  • Hilary Mantel (award-winning writer)
  •  The Most Reverend Desmond Tutu (former Archbishop of Cape Town)
  • Sir Magdi Yacoub (noted for his work in heart transplants)

The full criteria are set out in Regulation 2.

How can I nominate?

Please email Secretariat@london.ac.uk for a nomination form.

What happens next?

All nominations that meet the criteria will be considered by the Honorary Degrees Group, which is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor. Its recommendations will then be presented to the Collegiate Council, the body responsible for approving awards of University of London Honorary Degrees. The University will contact, in due course, those selected for the award of an Honorary Degree. All nominations are treated in the strictest confidence. Please do not contact your nominee under any circumstances.

You may be contacted if your nomination is successful and may be asked to provide further information. If you do not hear from the University, you should assume that your nomination has not been successful on this occasion, though names are often carried forward for consideration in subsequent years.

Please note that if you submitted a nomination for the previous calls, you should not resubmit the same name, however, you can submit another name.
