Martin Plaut, senior research fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICWS), writes in the New Statesman that the next president of the African National Congress (ANC) will be chosen against a background of ‘rumour, smears, dirty tricks and assassinations’. He says ‘The party of Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Albert Luthuli is almost unrecognisable today. Few any longer regard the ANC with the reverence and affection that it once took for granted.’
