New Dean at the School of Advanced Study

Distinguished Economic Historian, Professor Sir Roderick Floud has been appointed Dean of the School of Advanced Study (SAS) at the University of London. Sir Roderick replaces Professor Nicholas Mann, who retired at the end of July 2007 after seventeen years service to the School, the University and the academic community.

Independent Evaluation of the Public Defender Service (PDS) published by the Stationery Office

The results of a major, independent evaluation of the Public Defender Service (PDS) in England and Wales have today been published by The Stationery Office. (4 July 2007) The research involved a detailed comparison of the PDS and private criminal defence solicitors’ firms in six areas of the country (Birmingham, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Swansea, Pontypridd and Cheltenham). The main findings of the research were: that the PDS has been able to deliver high quality criminal defence, in most instances of an equal or higher standard than the best private criminal defence firms.

Hub for Contemporary British History to Strengthen City Links

The Centre for Contemporary British History (CCBH) at the IHR is delighted to announce the appointment of a new Director, Dr Richard Roberts. Previously a member of faculty at the University of Sussex, Dr Roberts is a highly experienced writer, researcher and teacher. A specialist in economic and financial history, he is author of many books on investment banking and international finance and is currently completing a study of the breakdown of the Bretton Woods fixed exchange rate system in the early 1970s.
