The School of Advanced Study's dean and chief executive, Professor Roger Kain CBE FBA, has been elected as a member of the prestigious Academia Europaea in recognition of his international scholarship.

Founded in 1988, the Academia has some 3,000 members worldwide, with 573 coming from all the UK’s disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, natural and physical sciences, mathematics, engineering and medicine. Individuals are elected as experts and leaders in their field by peer recognition.

The Academia’s objectives include the provision of independent advice to public and private bodies across Europe, and the promotion of better public understanding of the benefits of knowledge and learning, and of the scientific and scholarly issues affecting society, quality of life and living standards − a mission which is a close fit with that of the School.
