School of Advanced Study appoints new Dean

Friday 2 October 2009

Distinguished classical scholar, Professor Mike Edwards, has been appointed Acting Dean of the School of Advanced Study at the University of London, in succession to Professor Sir Roderick Floud. Sir Roderick, a renowned economic historian, has steered the School through a period of substantial change since he was appointed Dean in 2007. The review of the School by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) in 2007-08, led by Sir Ivor Crewe, concluded that the School should continue to receive special funding for a further five-year period, but led to a twenty-nine-point action plan. The implementation of this plan has been overseen by Sir Roderick and under his leadership work on this plan has now been largely completed.

Professor Mike Edwards will build on the strong progress made in meeting the recommendations of the Crewe review. The School’s Strategic Plan from 2009-10 to 2012-13 was agreed by HEFCE  in June this year and Professor Edwards will be taking this Plan forward to ensure that the School continues to deliver the results for which it receives national funding. Professor Edwards is Director of the Institute of Classical Studies, a member institute of the School.

Professor Mike Edwards said: “I am honoured, as Sir Roderick’s successor, to build on the solid foundations that have already been made under his leadership. These are exciting times for us as we strive to ensure that the School continues to deliver the results for which it is funded by HEFCE and so passes its next review in three years’ time with flying colours”.

Professor Sir Roderick Floud, former provost of the London Guildhall University, said: “It was a great privilege to return to an institution with which I have been connected now for over 40 years. The School is a centre of academic excellence and performs an invaluable service to the world of scholarship. I am certain that the future of the School, under the leadership of Professor Edwards, will be a secure one”.

Sir Graeme Davies, Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, commented: “The University and the School of Advanced Study were extremely fortunate to secure the leadership of Sir Roderick, who brought a wealth of experience in academic research and academic management to both institutions. Professor Edwards is an excellent successor to Sir Roderick and will soundly lead the School forward at this critical time, while a permanent replacement for the Deanship is sought”.
