Prof Somerville on the pros and cons of South Africa’s unsuccessful rhino auction

Professor Keith Somerville, senior research fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICWS), analyses the pros and cons of South Africa’s recent unsuccessful rhino auction. Writing in Save the Rhino's annual publication, The Horn, he says ‘unpalatable though it may be’, controlled sales of horn would reduce poaching by ‘meeting some demand’ and the income from ‘legal trade could improve a broad range of conservation methods’.
