London’s School of Advanced Study announces first changes following successful HEFCE review outcome

The Institute for the Study of the Americas is to be closed. A successor institute – the Institute of Latin American Studies – will be established in its place with its activities focused solely on Latin America and the Caribbean. The Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies will be renamed the Institute of Modern Languages Research to emphasise its wider remit.

London housing experts debate the latest crisis

The history of housing provision in London and how it could be used to address the current crisis in the capital is the theme of a conference being held at the Institute of Historical Research. The two-day conference, which starts today (Thursday 27 June) at Senate House, will examine the historical track record in both private and public sector housing, as well as focusing on council provision and the role this plays in politics and immigration.

Children’s voices ‘central’ to developing public policy

In the final lecture by the NZ-UK Link Foundation Visiting Professor, Anne Smith, she argues that respect for the rights and the voice of the child is central to the focus of promoting policies and practice that improve children’s lives. Emeritus Professor Anne Smith, based at the University of Otago’s College of Education in Dunedin, is a highly respected specialist in childhood studies and children’s rights.

Dr Wim Van Mierlo appointed Acting Director of the Institute of English Studies

The School of Advanced Study, University of London is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Wim Van Mierlo as Acting Director of the Institute of English Studies (IES). Dr Van Mierlo , who is Lecturer in Textual Scholarship and English Literature, will assume the Directorship in an acting capacity on 1 August 2013 following the retirement from the Directorship of the Institute's Founder,  Professor Warwick Gould , after 14 years in the post.

Famed British artist Patrick Hughes donates artwork to Institute of Philosophy

The surrealist artist Patrick Hughes - famed for his work on perspective and the creator of ‘reverse perspective’ – will tonight unveil his donated artwork The Books of Venice at the Institute of Philosophy in the University of London’s School of Advanced Study.

Columbia’s Professor James Shapiro to join London’s School of Advanced Study as ST Lee Visiting Fellow May-June 2013

Professor James Shapiro, Larry Miller Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University , will hold the ST Lee Visiting Professorial Fellowship at the School of Advanced Study, University of London for 2012-13. Professor Shapiro, a Shakespeare scholar and award-winning author, will be based at the School in May and June 2013. He will give a series of free public lectures during his time in the UK – at the universities of Durham, London and Sussex – covering a range of topics including early modern biography and the Cowell manuscript.
