Renowned classical scholar Frédérique Woerther joins School of Advanced Study as Visiting Fellow for 2014

Frédérique Woerther , an international expert in medieval Arabic and classical rhetorical studies, will take up a visiting fellowship at the School of Advanced Study (SAS), University of London. Currently a researcher and Bronze Medal award holder at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, the country’s largest government-run research organisation, Dr Woerther will be based at the Warburg Institute during June 2014.

Professor Philip Murphy is appointed Director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies

The School of Advanced Study, University of London is pleased to announce the appointment of Philip Murphy to a chair in the University and as director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies . Professor Murphy is currently Professor of British and Commonwealth History at the University of Reading, seconded as Director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies. At Reading he was responsible for establishing one of the UK’s first courses on the intelligence community and British politics.

School of Advanced Study and Senate House Library appoint Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Operations

Elaine Walters has been appointed as Deputy Chief Executive of the School of Advanced Study and Director of Operations for Senate House Library at the University of London. She will take up the appointment on 1 August 2014. This role, previously responsible for the School of Advanced Study (SAS) only, will now work across both the Senate House Library and School of Advanced Study, providing operational leadership and accountability for the management of administrative services.

Andrew Hussey appointed first Director of new Centre for Postcolonial Studies

Andrew Hussey has been appointed the first Director of a new Centre for Postcolonial Studies at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study it was announced today. Professor Hussey will also become the School’s first Professor of Cultural History. Professor Hussey is currently Dean of the University of London Institute in Paris (ULiP), a post he has held for eight years. He takes up his new role in September.

The School of Advanced Study, University of London is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Lawrence Goldman as the new Director of the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) . He will take up the appointment on 1 October 2014, succeeding Professor Miles Taylor , the IHR’s Director since 2008.

Professor Robin Gauld, healthcare systems expert, to take up NZ-UK Link Foundation visiting professorship

Robin Gauld , Professor of Health Policy and director of the Centre for Health Systems at the University of Otago, has been named the 2014 NZ-UK Link Foundation Visiting Professor . He will be based at the School of Advanced Study (SAS), University of London, from September to December, and will give his inaugural lecture in October. When accepting the appointment, Professor Gauld, who was educated at Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Hong Kong, said he was ‘deeply honoured and delighted to have been awarded the Visiting Professorship’.

The relationship between food and philosophy will be explored at an event to be held at the School of Advanced Study (SAS), University of London this week (February 21). Virtues of the Table: An Evening Discussion on Ethical issues raised by Food Choices is organised by the Institute of Philosophy (IP) and brings together Julian Baggini, a leading philosopher, writer and ‘conscientious omnivore’, Ben Reade, research chef and head of Copenhagen’s Nordic Food Lab (NFL), and Naomi Sykes, an archaeologist and husbandry expert.
