India elects ‘untouchable’ president from lowest ‘Dalit’ caste

Thursday 20 July 2017

Dr James Chiriyankandath, senior research fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICWS), is quoted in an NBC News article on the election of Ram Nath Kovind as India’s 14th president who, as a Dalit, is a member of the country’s lowest caste. ‘The real significance’, Dr Chiriyankandath states, ‘is not about caste but rather the expanding influence of the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and its brand of Hindu nationalism.’ The story also features in the Financial Express and Capital Bay.
