Professor Greg Woolf (left), director of the Institute of Classical Studies (ICS), has been awarded a ‘Chair of Excellence’ reciprocal grant, sponsored by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) and The Santander Bank.

A renowned authority on the history of the Roman Empire, Professor Woolf will spend three months in Madrid and Professor Jaime Alvar Ezquerra, director of UC3M’s Instituto de Historiografía, will visit the ICS for a similar period. Together they will organise a programme of research on the religious experience in the Roman Empire, beginning with an international colloquium on religion and the senses.

Greg Woolf says ‘Carlos III Madrid is one of the most dynamic departments of ancient history in Spain and its programme of teaching and research on ancient religion is internationally renowned. I am looking forward very much to working with colleagues there, and also to welcoming Jaime Alvar to the ICS.’

The Chairs of Excellence programme began in 2007, and since then 164 ‘chairs’ have been awarded. It is designed to foster excellence in research by attracting top international researchers and scholars to UC3M’s research groups and departments in their corresponding areas of research, to develop joint projects and long-term collaborations.

For the academic year 2017/18 seven annual chairs were announced – five year-long fellowships with two reciprocal semester ones – totaling 120,000 euros each co-financed by both institutions.

Professor Woolf follows in the footsteps of scholars from universities, scientific and research institutions of international renown such as: the Max Plank Institute, The London School of Economics, Boston University, the University of California, Cambridge University, the University of Chicago, the University of Minnesota, Paris Université and Stanford University.
