The honour recognises the pioneering research and achievements of renowned chef Heston Blumenthal and his work with the School’s Centre for the Study of the Senses (CenSes) in the Institute of Philosophy. Heston Blumenthal is widely considered to be a true innovator in his field. His work explores the relationship between the chemical and physical properties of food and its presentation and perception by humans. He is dedicated to the investigation and development of the multi-sensory experience of diners, a cooking approach he has introduced to the global world of gastronomy, and he continues to be at the forefront of the latest developments in sensory research.  His three Michelin starred restaurant The Fat Duck is one of only four restaurants in the UK to have earned Michelin’s highest rating.  His restaurants have received international recognition and acclaim for his multi-sensory approach to cooking, his work with our historic British past and his play with nostalgia.
