Britain’s banknotes need an ethnic minority face

Sunday 16 December 2018

Michael Ohajuru, senior research fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICWS), is one of the 200 signatories on a letter to the Sunday Times (behind a paywall) calling for British banknotes to feature an ethnic minority figure. The letter says ‘We do not lack candidates, and arguably their achievements were the greater for having been made at a time when many careers were effectively closed to them through colonial rules, racism or the legacy of slavery’. Featuring someone from an ethnic minority, would ‘send a message’ that their contribution to ‘Britain’s history, culture and economy is recognised and valued,’ the letter adds.
