Asmara: Africa’s best designed city?

Martin Plaut, senior research fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICWS), discusses the Eritrean capital Asmara and its peculiar architectural heritage on Monocle 24 Radio. He says Asmara’s colonial Italian architecture, which along with the capital’s odd mix of modernist buildings has recently been added to Unesco’s World Heritage list, was Mussolini’s attempt to ‘remodel Africa’.
