Strategic Framework

The School of Advanced Study supports national and international humanities researchers and scholars by creating opportunities for developing new research agendas and by providing unique specialist resources and services. This role stems from the special mandate and funding given to the School by REsearch England (formerly the Higher Education Funding Council for England, HEFCE) for research promotion and facilitation across the UK and internationally.

Our challenge is to become an indispensable component of the UK humanities research infrastructure. We are ready to do this.

In 2012, Edward Acton, Vice-Chancellor of the University of East Anglia, led a review of the School on behalf of HEFCE, after which the funding council expressed its confidence in the public benefit we provide to humanities subject communities. This vote of confidence has strengthened our commitment to research promotion and facilitation. Our Strategic Framework is a response to our renewed mission to nurture and lead the international community of humanities researchers and scholars, and to establish SAS as a hub for developments and initiatives in the humanities.

In delivering our programme we are supported by the University of London, which has, as a key part of its academic strategy, the School’s mission to deliver world-class research promotion and facilitation.

Our main strategic ambitions are:

1. To provide world-class support to individuals, networks and organisations conducting humanities research, nationally and internationally; identify and lead debates that stimulate new agendas and innovate thinking; show creativity in developing research services, resources and research training; and ensure that the social, cultural and economic benefits of humanities research in the UK are publicly recognised.

2. To produce and disseminate exemplary internationally recognised research to underpin the School’s research promotion and facilitation mission.

3. To enhance and deliver doctoral research training, outstanding taught postgraduate programmes and offer excellent quality doctoral supervision leading to University of London degrees.

4. To achieve financial sustainability and maintain high standards of accountability to our funding body and to the University of London.
