The Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICwS), founded in 1949, is home to the longest-running inter-disciplinary and practice-oriented human rights MA program in the UK. The MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights is aimed at individuals who are, or want to be, human rights professionals in non-governmental organisations (NGOs), governmental bodies, and international organisations. Students can participate in internships with human rights organisations based in London. We also offer a one-week study tour of the international human rights and humanitarian institutions in Geneva. http://commonwealth.sas.ac.uk/postgraduate-study/ma-in-human-rights.html
The ICwS is a national and international centre of excellence for policy-relevant research, research facilitation and teaching. It is the only postgraduate academic institution in the United Kingdom devoted to the study of the Commonwealth. As a member of the School of Advanced Study, established in 1994, the ICwS works with nine other prestigious postgraduate research institutes to offer academic opportunities across and between a wide
range of subject fields in the humanities and social sciences. http://commonwealth.sas.ac.uk/The School of Advanced Study is the UK's national centre for the promotion and support of research in the humanities and social sciences. It unites ten prestigious research institutes to provide specialised research resources, services and facilities for the benefit of the research community in the UK and globally. http://www.sas.ac.uk
The ICwS is also an active contributor to the Human Rights Consortium (HRC) hosted by the School of Advanced Study. The HRC was established to facilitate and promote research in human rights in the UK and internationally by, inter alia, organising and supporting academic, policy and practice-oriented events on human rights, fostering national and international networks of human rights academics, and hosting visiting fellows working in human rights. http://www.sas.ac.uk/human_rights.html
