Description

HRDs working to protect and promote economic, cultural and social rights such as land rights and indigenous rights are often targeted by state and non-state actors in the form of physical attack, threats, harassment, stigmatisation and undue criminal processes. Their work involves making sure states and companies adhere to national and international human rights and environmental standards in the planning and realisation of mining, hydro and agro industrial projects, and to hold them to account whenever such rights are violated in the process. Due to the powerful political and economic interests behind such projects, and due to the exposure of working in remote rural areas, HRDs working in this field require specifically tailored protection.
