Didier Eribon in Conversation with Jeffrey Weeks

Speakers: Didier Eribon, Returning to Reims (transl. Michael Lucey [Los Angeles, CA: Semiotext(e), 2013]) Jeffrey Weeks, Research Professor in the Weeks Centre for Social and Policy Studies, London South Bank University, and author of works including Coming Out: Homosexual Politics in Britain from the Nineteenth Century to the Present(1977), Sexuality and its Discontents: Meanings, Myths and Modern Sexualities (1985), and Making Sexual History (2000)

Since the publication in France of the Retour à Reims in 2009, the book has enjoyed considerable success and won new readerships for the author, Professor of Sociology at the University of Amiens, best known for his biography of Foucault and for Réflexions sur la question gay(translated as Insult and the Making of the Gay Self). Now available in an English translation by Michael Lucey, Returning to Reims is a highly personal journey that traces the processes by which the author’s subjectivity is structured by growing up gay in a difficult provincial working-class environment, navigating and ascending the republican education system, and casts anew an eye on that itinerary.
