Professor William Furley, ST Lee Visiting Professorial Fellow (February to July 2006)
Professor of Classics at Heidelberg University , William Furley did his PhD at the Trinity College, in Cambridge. Greek Religion is Professor Furley's main area of research. His work is now used as a stafard work of reference on the subject of the use of fire in Greek religion, which is of central importance for the understanding of Greek rituals.
His project, while at the School, is entitled, Menander, Epitrepontes, which is one of the five well-preserved and popular plays in antiquity. His aim will be to address the problems of the Greek text with all the new papyrus fragments without re-editing the papyri.
Professor Furley gave a seminar in the Dean's Seminar series entitled 'Drama at the festival: a recurrent motif in Menander' on 3rd May 2006 , and also gave a lecture entitled 'I made one mistake...', Comic hamartia in Menander , on 25th May.
