Equality and Human Rights Commission Project

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) research project, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Human Rights Consortium, School of Advanced Study, University of London is intended to provide a timely contribution to public debate on the development of the EHRC and its future at a time when it faces a number of opportunities and challenges.

It is conceived as a national forum for practitioners and scholars from across disciplines to engage in the sharing of perspectives and insights related to this novel institution.  The EHRC has the potential to play an important role as a vehicle to advance state compliance in the UK with human rights law and norms, yet it has remained largely peripheral to mainstream debate.

The project forms part of a broader research agenda on (1) the development and implementation of equality and human rights frameworks in the UK and Europe, and (2) National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) and their relationship to broader processes of equality and human rights observance globally.

The project hosts workshops, seminars and other events as a focal point for the development of a network of practitioners, policymakers, and researchers brought together by a professional and/or scholarly interest in the ECHR.  In collaboration with the AHRC and other partners, it undertakes policy research, as well as advancing scholarly publications, with a view to feeding into cutting-edge debate within the wider current affairs and policy community.
