Support for Human Rights Events

The Human Rights Consortium is committed to organising and supporting academic, policy and practice-oriented events on human rights. ‘Human Rights’ is defined in broad, multi-disciplinary terms.

Funding or other support for human rights-related events may be sought from the Human Rights Consortium. It is expected that the Consortium’s contribution is acknowledged on all publicity for that event.

Event organisers who do not seek support from the Human Rights Consortium are welcome to submit details of their events for inclusion on the Consortium’s online Calendar of Events.

Types of Support

The Consortium is able to provide the following types of support:

  • Intellectual input to the development of events on human rights in a number of different disciplines.
  • Up to £1500 for a conference of at least one day’s duration. Lesser amounts may be awarded for shorter events. It is expected that other sources of funding are also secured to support the event. Between three and four events per annum are likely to receive funding from the Human Rights Consortium.
  • Room hire for University of London venues at no charge. it is expected that events will be held at the University of London.
  • Publicity of the event to the Consortium’s networks via email and the website.
  • Administrative support (through a participating Institute) for the organisation of the event, including travel and accommodation bookings, arranging rooms and catering, receipt of registration forms and fees.
  • Input to collaborative grant applications for events.
  • Web-hosting of event videos for HRC-sponsored events.

Funding may be provided for the following costs associated with an event:

  • Speaker travel costs at economy rates. Taxi fares are generally not supported, but train or bus travel to and from airports may be included. Local travel for London-based speakers will not be funded. Per diem payments are not offered unless external funding is secured to cover the cost.
  • Speaker accommodation costs up to £75 per night for bed and breakfast. Additional hotel costs (such as telephone charges, newspapers etc) will not be covered.
  • Modest catering costs. This may include tea, coffee and biscuits for all participants and lunch for speakers and organisers. Funds are not normally expected to cover the costs of conference dinners or receptions.
  • Web-casting and videoing costs, which should be costed at £300 per day.
  • Publication of an edited collection of papers, either online or in hard copy through one of the School's publishing arrangements. Costs may include copy-editing, typesetting and design, and printing. Funding will not be made available to support publication by a commercial publisher or journal.

The Consortium is unlikely to provide funds for a student-only event, but it supports the inclusion of graduate student presentations within conference programmes.

The Consortium does not usually fund additional bursaries for events which already have secured significant support from elsewhere.
