Review 2000
In 2000 the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE
) undertook a review of the School with the following purpose:
To assess the work, activities and contribution of the University of London’s School of Advanced Study in relation to the funding made available by the Higher Education Funding Council and to advise the Council on the future funding of the School.

Review 2005
In 2005 HEFCE
undertook a further review of the School to follow up that undertaken in 2000, with the following terms of reference
- To examine the operation of Special Funding arrangements for the School of Advanced Study at the University of London and advise the Council of their effectiveness, in the light of the review panel in 2000, the decision of HEFCE Board in 2001 and the subsequent agreement with the University;
- To suggest an appropriate mechanism for reviewing the Special Funding arrangement, and determining the appropriate level of Special Funding for the School of Advanced Study after 2008.

Review 2007
In 2007 HEFCE
undertook a further review of the School to follow up that undertaken in 2005, with the following terms of reference:
- To provide advice to HEFCE on long term options for the funding of the School of Advanced Study (SAS).
- To review and assess the work and activities of the SAS in terms of the contribution made to the relevant subject communities in London, nationally and internationally.
- To review income, costs and value for money of the SAS.
