Professor Barry C Smith has been appointed to the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) Interdisciplinary Research Advisory Panel (IDAP).
The IDAP was set up earlier this year by the four UK higher education funding bodies – the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Scottish Funding Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, and the Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland.
Members will provide advice to the REF team, panels and UK funding bodies during the criteria-setting phase. Led by experimental physicist Professor Dame Athene Donald, they are expected to ensure that REF 2021 supports the submission and fair assessment of interdisciplinary research, and that this is clearly demonstrated during the development and implementation of the exercise.
Commenting on his new role Professor Smith, who is director of the School of Advanced Study’s Institute of Philosophy (IP), said: ‘With an increasing emphasis on interdisciplinary research by the research councils, it’s vital that universities be assured that due attention has been given to how the best interdisciplinary research should be evaluated.’ The position is initially for two years.
