Professor Linda Newson to be appointed as Director of the Institute for the Study of the Americas

The School of Advanced Study, University of London, is pleased to announce that the post of Director of the Institute for the Study of the Americas (ISA) has been offered to Professor Linda Newson FBA, who has accepted the position subject to contract. Linda Newson is a Professor of King’s College London (KCL) specialising in Latin America during the colonial era. She is also Chair of the British Academy’s Anthropology and Geography section, and is Chair of the Academy’s Latin American and Caribbean Panel. Professor Newson is a former member of ISA’s Advisory Council and previously taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Cambridge, and currently holds positions at the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Library.

Professor Roger Kain FBA, Dean and Chief Executive of the School of Advanced Study, commented “Linda is a very significant figure in the field of Latin American studies and will be a real asset to ISA as it continues to engage with its mission to facilitate and promote research. As part of the School of Advanced Study, ISA has a unique role to play for higher education in  collaborating with scholars both in the UK and internationally, to maximise the impact of their research. Linda’s substantial experience and wide range of contacts in the field will allow ISA to build on its work in this regard, and I welcome her warmly to the School.”

Professor Newson will take up her position at a date to be agreed on a secondment basis from KCL.
