Professor Guy Goodwin-Gill inaugurates Refugee Law Initiative’s 2nd ‘International Refugee Law’ seminar series

Friday 21 October 2011

On 11 October 2011, Professor Guy S Goodwin-Gill of All Souls College, University of Oxford, inaugurated the Refugee Law Initiative’s (RLI) 2nd ‘International Refugee Law’ seminar series.

Professor Goodwin-Gill’s paper explored contemporary challenges to the interpretation and application of the Refugee Convention’s Article 1 F(c), which denies refugee status where serious reasons exist for considering that an asylum-seeker has committed acts ‘contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations’. He devoted particular attention to the question of whether terrorism or attacks against United Nations-authorised forces fall under the scope of this provision.

Attended by around a hundred scholars, lawyers and other practitioners, the wide-ranging discussion that ensued was chaired by Dr David James Cantor, RLI Director. A short report of the seminar is available from the RLI website.
